June 2024 Biannual Meeting

MOQC held its June Biannual Meeting on Friday, June 21, 2024 at the Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth, Michigan. The meeting focused on well-being. If you were unable to attend, please review the summary below and visit https://moqc.org/resources/past-meeting-library/ to watch recordings from the day.

The meeting began with a welcome from Keli DeVries and an acknowledgment of MOQC’s 15th Anniversary. Dawn Severson, MD then shared updates from the Steering Committee, including that the January biannual meeting will focus on addressing “things that keep you up at night” and that we will be discussing the possibility of sharing identified data at biannual meetings. Michael Stellini, MD, shared updates from the Palliative Care and End-of-Life Task Force including an exciting opportunity in development with the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) to provide training in palliative care to APPs at MOQC practices.

Jennifer Griggs, MD, MPH reviewed the data for the MOQC collaborative. The data for several new measures was shown for the first time. In addition to the performance data for the past year, performance over time was shown for most measures, which provided a helpful perspective of how MOQC performance has changed over time. Multivariate analyses were also reviewed for several measures, which looked at nonclinical and clinical patient characteristics associated with measure performance, such as age, race, and cancer type.

The meeting then featured a unique session – a debate on the MOQC family history measure. Two teams argued the pro and con sides of collecting and documenting a complete family history. The audience was encouraged to hold up green and red cards to show their agreement or disagreement. Each team had a chance to lay out their argument as well as rebut the other side’s arguments. It was a lively debate and addressed many of the benefits and challenges of the measure.

The panel session on “Clinician and Team Well-Being,” moderated by Jennifer Griggs, MD, MPH and featuring Elizabeth Harry, MD; Ishwaria Subbiah, MD, MA; and Rachel Thienprayoon, MD, MSCS provided valuable insights into the challenges and solutions for improving physician and team well-being. The session underscored the necessity of both individual actions and systemic reforms to create a sustainable and supportive environment for healthcare providers.

The meeting concluded with an interactive session focused on resources for patients, caregivers, and healthcare teams led by Ashley Bowen and Vanessa Aron. The two shared resources focused on patient and caregiver wellness including mental health and financial wellbeing. Resources included the MOQC developed patient and caregiver resources search engine, as well as organizations that practices can refer patients to for additional assistance, like Michigan 2-1-1 and the Patient Advocate Foundation.

Overall, it was an engaging and meaningful meeting. We hope to see you in the fall for our regional meetings and virtually in January for our next biannual meeting.
