June Biannual Summary

MOQC’s June Biannual Meeting was held on Friday, June 20th at Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth, MI. It was the largest biannual meeting that MOQC has ever had! Both medical oncology and gynecologic oncology attended, with joint sessions in the morning and separate medical and gynecologic sessions in the afternoon.

Following an update from POQC, Renu Tipirneni, MD, MSc, FACP and Matthias Kirch, MS from Michigan Social Health Interventions to Eliminate Disparities (MSHIELD) presented on the implications for quality improvement of ensuring access to high-quality health care for all people. The presentation explored how data collection, clinician training, and patient-centered approaches can come together to improve outcomes for all people, touching on shared language, assumptions in healthcare, and the landscape of unmet non-medical needs.

Reverend Diane Smith, MDiv, BCC then provided an update on the Access & Outcomes Advisory Committee, Dawn Severson, MD presented the Steering Committee Report, and Michael Stellini, MD, MS shared an update of the Palliative Care and End-of-Life Task Force. Jennifer Griggs, MD, MPH and Stefany Acosta-Torres, MD celebrated the 14 practices that achieved MOQC Excellence in Quality Certification (MEQC) in 2024 with POQC members presenting each practice with a plaque.

Attendees were able to select a breakout session to end the morning with topics encompassing Oncology Stewardship, Making Hospice Conversations Easier, Incorporating the Voice of the Patient and Caregiver into Your Practice, MEQC: Preparing for and What to Expect at Your Certification Site Visit, and Emotional Exhaustion. The sessions were very engaging.

The afternoon was split into medical oncology and gynecologic oncology. Both covered their respective data for MOQC measures. The gynecologic oncology meeting had a presentation by Sean Smith, MD on Prehabilitation, the process of continuum of care that occurs between the time of cancer diagnosis and treatment. The medical oncology meeting featured a talk by Emerson Delacroix, LLP, MACP, RYT-200 on using motivational interviewing to improve tobacco reduction and cessation.
