Practice Benefits
- Free services for any patient diagnosed with cancer. Free services include:
a. Free Nicotine Replacement Therapy
b. Free behavioral modification telephonic counselling and follow up, including text messaging
c. Access to negotiated services between MOQC practices & Quitline vendor
d. Monthly practice reports from Quitline
e. Prepared referral Fax sheets
- Zero physician time or intervention required
- Scripts for medical assistants and front-office/check in/check out staff to use
- Office and examination room posters and patient information
- Practice “care package” every year for Great American Smoke Out Campaign in conjunction with American Cancer Society (3rd Thursday in November)
- De-identified comparative data for improvement
Tobacco Cessation Project Requirements
Eligibility
- Be a MOQC practice with a current participation agreement
- Submit QOPI data per MOQC requirements
- Provide care to Michigan adults (age 18 years and older) with a diagnosis of cancer
- Can be a participant in a face-to-face tobacco cessation counselling program in addition to this program
Minimum Requirements
- Participate for a minimum of 90 days (for oncologist to meet requirements for MIPS) but preferably for longer (e.g. months)
- Leadership and active involvement by physician with plan/do/check/act cycle of improvement set forth in the MOQC approach for the project so that the oncologist, if required, can attest to project requirements for Maintenance of Certification for ABIM
- Identify a leader
- Small team of individuals based at a site interested in working with patients and their families in assisting them with quitting tobacco products; consider medical assistants, check in/check out staff, social workers and nurses
- Attend a one-hour webinar/orientation (team)
- Ability to work together to identify changes necessary to:
- Ask patients if they use tobacco products
- If they use tobacco products, to advise them to stop
- Refer them to the Michigan Quitline for free Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and behavioral modification telephonic counselling (note: this is free to Michigan residents with a diagnosis of cancer)
- Ability to use pre-set materials that can be adapted to practice
- Collection of baseline data based on 20 random charts with re-measurement after intervention has been implemented
- Understand addiction and how to approach, communicate, and form a non-judgmental but supportive role with patients struggling with tobacco addiction
- Passion for improving care in this population
- Train a minimum of two individuals per site to ensure continuity and sustainability

- To increase the number/proportion of patients that “quit” using tobacco products at a site or practice
